That's why we offer our “Courtesy Pay” service for those with Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union Checking Accounts. If you accidentally overdraw your account, we've got you covered.* It's a great way to avoid insufficient funds or NSF, prevent transfer fees, protect your credit rating, and have peace of mind. The easiest and fastest way is through Online Banking. You may also contact our Call Center at 586.263.8800, option 6. Or you can complete this printable form and bring it to one of our locations. If for some reason you decide you would rather not have Courtesy Pay services, please let us know. You'll always have the option to opt back in, should you change your mind.
Anyone who has inadvertently had a check returned or ATM/Debit Card transaction denied knows how quickly a small mistake can turn into big consequences. First, there are substantial returned check fees charged by the merchant or creditor who receives your check. Then come the collection fees and embarrassing phone calls. Finally, the whole situation could be forwarded to a major credit reporting agency possibly lowering your credit rating, potentially costing you hundreds of dollars in higher interest payments in the years ahead. Thanks to the Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union Courtesy Pay program, you can now avoid these problems. Courtesy Pay will cover your check, debit, ACH, or ATM transaction in the event you do not have enough available funds in your account. Be sure you are covered for them all.
If you're a member in good standing and qualify for this benefit, we will cover checks, automatic recurring bill payments, and Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions that overdraw your personal checking account up to a designated amount based on your eligibility. To extend this benefit for ATM and everyday Debit Card transactions, please fill out this form and return it to Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union. For each check or other item that we cover, we charge a $30 fee. With our Courtesy Pay service, the merchant — and credit reporting agencies — will never know that you were overdrawn! You won't pay a fee to them. We will notify you anytime your Courtesy Pay service is activated. If you have questions about your account, you can view your account history through Online Banking.
Once your Courtesy Pay service has been activated to cover an overdraft, it is your responsibility to correct any balance deficiency as quickly as possible. Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union expects you to make a deposit covering your overdraft and fees within 16 days. After that time, our normal collection process begins. We trust you'll agree that it's important to promptly meet your financial obligations to preserve your good standing with the Credit Union and to prevent any collection activity.
All primary Checking Accounts offered by Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union are eligible provided the account owners meet the eligibility requirements. The Money Market Checking Account is not considered a Primary Checking Account and is not eligible for this service. Also, business, minor, and non-individual accounts are not eligible.
Courtesy Pay services will be extended for checks presented at any Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union branch; checks clearing through the Federal Reserve System; payments clearing through an Automated Clearing House (ACH); and recurring bill payments. You must provide your affirmative consent for us to extend this benefit for ATM and one-time Debit transactions.
Members in good standing, ages 18 and older with an open primary Checking Account are eligible for Courtesy Pay services. Business, minor, and non-individual accounts are not eligible.
The Courtesy Pay privilege will be suspended if:
- Any loan is delinquent for more than 10 days.
- The Checking Account has not been brought to a positive balance at least once in the past 16 days.
Your current Overdraft Protection arrangements will remain in place exactly as they are now. Courtesy Pay services will only be activated if there are insufficient funds available from your other accounts or line of credit.
You have enough things to worry about...overdrawing your checking account shouldn't be one of them. When you open your Checking Account, you may designate a Line of Credit or a Savings Account of your choice to cover any overdrafts.*
*Member must qualify for Overdraft Protection.
Overdraft Protection FAQ
You can visit any branch location or call the Credit Union at 586.263.8800, option 6, to verify what Overdraft Protection options are currently in place for your account.
Fees are not assessed if you are utilizing Overdraft Protection from a Line of Credit; however, interest charges may apply. When utilizing the overdraft transfer option from a designated Savings Account, a service fee may apply. If you do not have an approved Line of Credit or Savings Account set up as Overdraft Protection and your account becomes overdrawn, Courtesy Pay or NSF (non-sufficient funds) fees may apply.
