If you’re celebrating Halloween, you know money can vanish like a ghost! From decorations to sweet treats, the costs can be a little scary. Costumes are one of the biggest expenses for this haunted holiday, especially if you’re dressing up your family for trick-or-treating, trunk-or-treat events, or parties.
How to keep costume costs affordable
- Set a budget. Knowing how much you want to spend before you shop will help you determine if you can buy a costume at full-price or need to explore other options like borrowing or making one.
- Shop outside the box. Think about shopping at thrift stores (they might even have a costume section), dollar stores, or consignment shops. Discount stores like TJ Maxx and Marshall’s sometimes carry costumes and accessories too.
- Check your closet for clothing you can repurpose. Many costumes come together by using pieces you already have.
- Search online for affordable DIY ideas. The internet is full of creative and inexpensive costumes.
- Borrow a costume from a friend or family member. Did your friend have a really cool costume last year? Ask them to borrow it and offer to share your candy from trick-or- treating as a thank you. You could even swap costumes with a friend so you both save money!
Watch out for criminals’ spooky tactics
If you decide to buy a costume online, be aware that crooks are lurking in the dark to steal your money through a fake website scam.
In this fraud tactic, an online retailer will offer an impressive selection of Halloween costumes and décor at prices that are too good to be true. Unfortunately, the website is fake, and you will not receive any items after making a purchase. The criminals will disappear like a ghost with your money and steal financial information like debit or credit card details.
Protect your money from monsters
Before placing an order with a seasonal website or any online retailer:
- Find the company’s physical address and phone number on the website.
- Check what the Better Business Bureau has to say and verify it’s a company you can trust.
- Ensure there is information about return and refund policies listed on the website.
- Review the company’s website URL and ensure there is a lock icon and “https” in the webpage address to confirm you’re ordering from a secure site.
How to save for next year’s festivities
Remember that décor, party supplies, and costumes will go on sale right after October 31. It’s a great time to stock up on items for next year and save money. Check your favorite retailer’s website or emails for any upcoming discounts to ensure you don’t miss out.
Happy Halloween!
