Less Packing, More Relaxing: Enjoy Labor Day Without Leaving TownBy MSGCU on 9/1/2025

Because it’s considered the last weekend of the summer, Labor Day might mean a last fling to a resort within driving distance. With rising gas prices, hefty hotel/vacation rental bills, and Labor Day traffic, many are rethinking the need to go away to enjoy a long weekend.

You can still unplug and get the final R&R weekend you’ve been looking for. Turn off your cell phone, and travel down the road, or even just down the hall, instead.

Be a tourist in your city

For starters, check out state or city websites, local travel blogs, or pick up a tourist book from AAA. Read about the activities in your area.

Cities are often home to dozens of museums, historical sites, stores, restaurants, and children’s attractions that you may have never visited … and they’re all located right in your hometown. For fun, free outings, check out:

Adventure in your own neighborhood

Not near a city or want to explore closer to home? Go on a leisurely bike ride or host a family barbecue or reunion. If you have a Recreation Passport, take a drive to one of Michigan’s beautiful state or metro parks. Is one of the Great Lakes calling your name? Take your friends or family to the beach or look in to renting a boat, kayak, or paddle boards for the day.

Holiday at home

You don’t need to stray far from home on Labor Day to have fun. Go out to lunch or dinner or treat yourself to ice cream. Host a movie or game night with friends, build a giant fort in the living room, or trying camping in your own backyard. Remember, you don’t have to stay in a hotel to be on vacation.

There are many benefits to staying close to home for Labor Day. You’ll spend the last days of summer with your family doing something fun instead of losing precious hours in the car. You’ll have a wonderful, relaxing time, and you might even start a new trend or family tradition.
