Summer break is the perfect time for kids to learn responsibility, build confidence, and earn their own spending money in creative ways. While traditional chores are always an option, parents can make allowances more engaging by encouraging fun, entrepreneurial activities that keep children active and learning all summer long.
Here are a few unique ideas for kids to earn extra cash during summer break:
1. Become the Neighborhood “Helper”
Kids can offer simple services to neighbors like watering plants, bringing in mail, feeding pets, or helping seniors carry groceries. These small tasks teach responsibility while helping build communication skills and confidence.
2. Start a Lemonade or Snack Stand
A classic summer activity can still be a big hit! Encourage kids to create a themed lemonade and/or snack stand. They can sell traditional lemonade, or, make a fun menu of items for customers to choose from, like Arnold Palmers, bottled water, popsicles, and baked sweets. Kids learn basic money management, customer service, and creativity along the way.
3. Create a Neighborhood Car Wash
Hot summer days make car washes an easy and fun way to earn money. Kids can make signs, set prices, and even create “premium” wash packages for extra fun and money.
4. Be a Tech Helper for Family Members
Many kids are tech-savvy. Older children can help grandparents or neighbors organize photos, set up devices, or teach basic smartphone tips in exchange for a small fee.
5. Take on “Adventure Challenges”
Turn everyday chores into exciting missions. Pulling weeds can become the Garden Rescue Mission, or hold a speed clean championship to see who can put away toys the fastest. Gamifying tasks keeps kids motivated and turns work into summer fun!
Teach Smart Money Habits with Greenlight
Summer is also a great opportunity to teach financial responsibility when kids begin to earn their own money. Greenlight, the debit card and money app designed for kids and teens, can help families manage allowances while introducing important money skills. Parents can set up automatic allowances, assign chores, and monitor spending through the app, while kids learn how to save, spend wisely, and even set financial goals. It even offers a special QR code that customers can scan to pay for their services, and is deposited directly into your child’s account. It’s a simple way to turn summer earnings into real-life financial lessons that can last long after vacation ends.
Greenlight is free for MSGCU families*. Fund the debit card with an MSGCU checking account, we’ll waive the cost, and you can get a free^ custom card in June. Visit our Greenlight page for more information or open a checking account to get started.
Make Summer More Meaningful
Allowances don’t have to be limited to folding laundry or taking out the trash. By encouraging creative ways to earn money, parents can help kids gain independence, stay productive, and learn valuable life skills during summer break — all while having fun.
