MSGCU partners with Saline High School to present Rachel’s Challenge

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Oct. 2, 2023 – Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) announced it is supporting Saline High School students and staff by bringing Rachel’s Challenge to the school, a program created to build a positive school culture and start a chain reaction of kindness.

The goal of Rachel’s Challenge is to encourage kindness, compassion, and connection to prevent school violence and bullying. As participants in the program, Saline High School students and staff will attend training and an assembly focused on fostering a kind and supportive culture. Rachel’s Challenge will be an ongoing program throughout the school year, with students participating in daily connection activities and the establishment of the Friends of Rachel club to help them reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.

“MSGCU is a caring organization that follows the credit union philosophy of people helping people,” said Steve Brewer, MSGCU President/CEO. “Helping bring this important program to Saline High School is our way of giving back to the school community and making a long-lasting impact that can change lives for the better, which aligns with our community-focused approach.”

Saline High School students and staff will start Rachel’s Challenge on October 4, and the school will also host an event open to the community that evening in the auditorium at 7 p.m. School parents and local residents are welcome to attend and participate in the program to learn how they can make a difference at the school and in their community. The high school is located at 1300 Campus Parkway in Saline.

“Rachel’s Challenge will support Saline High School with our goal of building community and developing a positive school culture among students and staff,” said Musetta Deneen, Saline High School Assistant Principal/9th Grade Principal. “We look forward to implementing this program and seeing the benefits it will provide for our school community.”

MSGCU is connected to the Saline community through its branch office in the city at 6983 E. Michigan Avenue, where Saline native Katie Whitt serves as Branch Manager. Whitt has more than 10 years of experience in the financial services industry and joined MSGCU in 2022. She graduated from Saline High School and is now a proud Saline Hornet mom.

Bringing Rachel’s Challenge to Saline High School allows MSGCU to help cultivate positive change and further support the neighborhoods it serves in this area. Rachel’s Challenge was created after the Columbine High School shooting in honor of Rachel Scott and the other victims lost in the tragedy. Her family learned that Rachel made a profound impact on the lives of others through compassion and kindness, which inspired them to start the non-profit organization that promotes positive connections to enhance overall wellbeing for students in elementary, middle, and high schools.
