The U.S. and Internet Scams

  • The U.S. is the most scammed country in the world with more than a million scam complaints and $20.9 billion lost to scams in 2025.
  • 22,000+ scam complaints came from Michigan.
  • There was a 26% increase in losses from 2024 to 2025.
  • Youth financial losses have grown faster than any other group over the years.

Romance scams continue to be a significant issue:

  • The average loss per scam victim in 2025 was $40,100.
  • Over half of victims fail to report their experience.

Email, text, and messaging apps remain important channels for scam contact.

Many online scams start on social media sites:

  • 3 in 4 were initiated through Facebook
  • 1 in 5 were initiated through YouTube
  • Instagram, Reddit, X, and TikTok have also been linked to fraudulent schemes.
