3 of the most common questions
You asked… we answered. If you’re wondering what it takes to open a bank account, here’s all the info you need to succeed.
How old do I have to be?
At MSGCU, you can apply for a checking account if you’re 16 or 17 years old – no parent co-signer required – as long as you attend our Getting Started with Cash & Credit workshop. If you opt not to attend the workshop, you can open an account with a parent.
Eighteen or over? You can open an account entirely on your own.
Our Achieve Student Debit Account is designed specifically for members aged 16 to 23. For members aged 13-17, MSGCU offers a special Youth Savings Account.
What information do you need?
To open an account, we’ll need your social security number, along with a driver’s license, military ID, or passport.
Next, you’ll need money to fund your new account. All members have at least a savings account and you need a minimum of $5 in the account. If you’re starting a checking account, like the Achieve Student Debit Account, the opening balance is $25.
Most young members fund their account with cash, although other options are available too.
How long will it take me?
For new youth members, visiting a branch location to open your account is recommended. Our friendly team members take the time to get to know you and kickstart your financial success with education on your new account. This guidance usually takes about 30 minutes.
With our virtual appointment system, sign in when you arrive, and you’ll get text alerts with your place in line.
3 of the biggest benefits
At MSGCU, it’s easy to make the most of your membership. Our mobile app lets you manage your money from your phone and on the go, and is rated higher than 4 stars. And to help you shop (and save) smarter, we also offer financial education online and in person. But… that’s not all.
Get your cash, your way.
We have 30,000 free ATMs, which means it’s easy to find on when you need it. Find one near you in our mobile app (see Locations in the menu).
Roll up the change and save.
After every purchase, you can choose to round the amount to the nearest dollar and automatically transfer the extra change into your savings account.
Safeguard your spending.
Keep your spending in check with $200 daily limits on debit transactions and ATM withdrawals.
